1 Samuel Chapter 17

“David and Goliath”

From the time I was a young boy I have loved to hear the stories of the Bible. There are so many great and exciting stories for people of all ages. Some will say, “Oh the Bible is so boring; just a bunch of “do’s and don’ts”. But I believe to the contrary, and I know I’m right. But, don’t just take my word for it, listen to this story.

There once was a young boy named David. He was the youngest of eight sons – his father’s name was Jesse. David’s job was to mind the family’s sheep, so each day his job was to take the sheep out to the pasture to eat. This would seem like a safe and simple job, but it wasn’t; out in the open pasture there were animals who wanted to eat David’s sheep, and they would come right up to him to kill him and his sheep. But David was not afraid. Why? First, he had God as his Protector. He had come to believe in God when he was just a young boy, and since that time he had seen God work so powerfully in his life that he knew that God was with him.

But God had impressed on David in his life that he should always be prepared in any situation. After all, God had given him a good mind and a strong body, and God wanted him to use all of his abilities. So, David became an expert with a sling shot. He could put a stone into his sling, and with that sling he had actually killed big wild ferocious animals. So, David trusted in God, AND he was determined to be able to stand up in every situation that came his way.

Well, a local army called the Philistines came to Israel to kill all of the people there, and to take over their land. When the Israelite army came to face the Philistines, they saw that they had a giant fighting for them – yes he was a real giant – almost 10 feet tall – and the Israelite men were so afraid.

When David heard that the giant, his name was Goliath, was out in front challenging anyone to come out and fight him, he could not believe that not one of the men on his side would do it; even his own brothers were afraid. Well, he went up to the leader of the army, King Saul, and said that he would take on the giant. All of the men laughed when they heard David talking – Goliath was not just a giant, he was a mighty warrior with his whole body covered with armor. He had a long spear, a huge sword, and he feared no one.

But it made David so mad that Goliath kept mocking God, saying mean and disrespectful things about God. That was so wrong. Well, when David finally got to talk with King Saul, he reminded him that God was on their side, and that “with God, all things are possible”.

Well, he finally convinced the king to let him go out and meet Goliath for a fight to the death, and when he did go out where Goliath could see him, Goliath laughed and laughed and laughed; AND he just kept mocking God. But David was not afraid – he had God – but he also had something else – he was an expert with his slingshot. So as Goliath positioned himself to take David out, to squash him like a little bug, David place a smooth stone in his sling and began to swing it around his head, faster, and faster, and faster.

But how could David even hurt him? He was completely covered with armor. A rock could not pierce that armor. But David noticed something; Goliath was covered with solid armor, he even had an armor helmet. But there was one small spot, a small uncovered spot just below Goliath’s helmet, right at the temple of Goliath’s gigantic head. Now remember, David had been practicing; he trusted God to deliver him, but he also believed that God wanted him to be an expert with that slingshot, and he wanted him to be prepared to use it accurately.

So, there they were, the Giant Goliath covered with armor carrying a big spear readying himself to cut David into pieces and feed him to the dogs, and there was little David swinging that sling with one small stone inside. And then, at just the right moment, David let that sling release and that rock went flying so fast so hard, so accurate, that it hit Goliath in just that one spot where he had no armor; and the force was so powerful, so accurate that Goliath crashed to the ground. He fell so hard that the ground shook from the force. Then, before Goliath could recover, before he could get back up, David took Goliath’s own massive sword – and cut Goliath’s head right off! Wow, everyone was so shocked, that the Philistine army ran for their lives, and the army of Israel took off after them – the battle was won – Goliath was dead – and God was honored.

Now you tell me that the Bible doesn’t have some great stories. The Bible is full of great stories.

Now, finally, the moral to this story – trust God with all of your heart AND be prepared for whatever may come your way – be self-reliant – be ready!
