Born and raised in Wisconsin, Don grew up working in his family’s greenhouse, developing an impressive work ethic that would remain with him throughout his life. While attending high school, he enjoyed studying mechanics and general trades. He also discovered a lifelong passion for aviation, learning to fly crop-dusting aircraft at a remarkably young age.

After high school, Don joined the United States Army and served during the Korean War as a helicopter pilot flying medical evacuation missions. Following his military service he continued flying helicopters, including transporting executives throughout the Chicago area.

Don later flew rotor-wing aircraft for Continental Air Lines before joining American Airlines, where he transitioned to commercial jets and ultimately became a captain flying international routes. He retired in 1995 after 35 years of dedicated service.

Retirement did little to slow Don down. He established a successful dirt and loam business in the Dallas area and continued his love of aviation as a pilot with the Commemorative Air Force, flying the historic B-25 Mitchell bomber “Yellow Rose” at air shows across the country.

A gifted carpenter and craftsman, Don built custom cabinetry and furniture. Most notably, he designed and built a beloved family lake home from the ground up. He also devoted decades of service to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he volunteered his time and talents as property manager.

Beyond his many accomplishments, Don was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and family man. He was a protector and provider who expressed his love through a lifetime of leading by example and hard work.

About Jerry Stewart

I am a story teller. Since 1998, I have been telling the true stories of our nation and those Americans gone before us.  To say the least, these stories have been well received by Americans, both young and old.  So, here’s where the stories have taken me.  In 1998, I was broadcasting my stories on just one radio station in Washington State.  Today, from Texas 15 years later, these programs are now broadcast through a syndicated radio network to over 400 radio stations all across America, with literally millions of listeners.
